What is insulin resistance and how to determine it?

Insulin resis­tance is a con­di­tion in which our body’s cells become less sen­si­tive to insulin, the hor­mone that helps metab­o­lize our body’s main fuel, glu­cose. The high­er the insulin tol­er­ance, the less “fuel” our body receives, the more glu­cose it strives to release into the blood, and the clos­er the dan­ger­ous dis­ease — dia­betes. Here are some signs of incip­i­ent insulin resis­tance.

Obesity around the waist

In women, excess weight is pri­mar­i­ly dis­trib­uted on the hips and but­tocks; the “apple” type of obe­si­ty, in which “reserves” are accu­mu­lat­ed in the waist area, is more typ­i­cal for men. It is all the more impor­tant to see a doc­tor as soon as pos­si­ble if you have a tum­my. The fact is that fat in the abdom­i­nal area — abdom­i­nal fat — is espe­cial­ly active in the pro­duc­tion of hor­mones that affect glu­cose tol­er­ance and there­by increase the risk of dia­betes. Check your glu­cose lev­els, make an appoint­ment with an endocri­nol­o­gist and be sure to review your diet and lifestyle: a diet low in light car­bo­hy­drates and exer­cise should help.

Acne and enlarged pores

With increased insulin resis­tance, the body begins to active­ly pro­duce sebum, which in turn leads to enlarged pores and the for­ma­tion of acne. If this has become your prob­lem, do not rush to see a cos­me­tol­o­gist — per­haps you should make an appoint­ment with an endocri­nol­o­gist first!

Hair loss

Every day we lose from 70 to 100 hairs, and this is nor­mal. But if you notice stray hairs on your brush or pil­low, it’s worth check­ing your glu­cose lev­els and mak­ing an appoint­ment with your doc­tor: hair loss is anoth­er sign of devel­op­ing insulin resis­tance.

Edema

Swelling is most com­mon in the ankles, but flu­id reten­tion can occur in oth­er parts of the body. The fact is that it is insulin that “orders” the kid­neys to remove sodi­um and flu­id from the body — and if the bal­ance of this hor­mone is dis­turbed, ede­ma and bloat­ing can form. Do not ignore the symp­tom, con­sult a doc­tor!

Elevated blood sugar

An obvi­ous symp­tom that is nev­er­the­less often ignored. If your glu­cose lev­el does not go beyond the red line, but is approach­ing or slight­ly exceed­ing the upper lim­it of nor­mal, do not ignore it or wait for it to go away on its own — con­sult a doc­tor. This could be the first sign of a seri­ous ill­ness!

Carbohydrate cravings

When insulin resis­tance devel­ops, the body los­es its abil­i­ty to extract ener­gy from glu­cose and lacks the strength to function—despite the fact that there is enough or even excess sug­ar in the blood. And there­fore the brain is sure that we need more, even more glu­cose — and we want more, even more car­bo­hy­drates. If sud­den­ly buns, pota­toes, or sweets seem espe­cial­ly desir­able to you — and this crav­ing does not go away, con­sult a doc­tor as soon as pos­si­ble!

How to lose weight with insulin resistance?

First, just like with­out insulin resis­tance, you need to main­tain a calo­rie deficit. You should also avoid drinks with high sug­ar con­tent. Research shows that sug­ar-sweet­ened bev­er­ages (includ­ing fruit juices) account for about a third of all added sug­ars in our diet, so sim­ply cut­ting them out can sig­nif­i­cant­ly reduce your calo­rie intake. It is also ben­e­fi­cial to eat as many fresh veg­eta­bles and fruits as pos­si­ble, as well as to engage in aer­o­bic exer­cise: after swim­ming, walk­ing or jog­ging, insulin lev­els decrease.
