He lost 125 kilograms and entered the Guinness Book of Records.

People are divided into two types: some begin to lose weight gradually, while others go on a hunger strike to get rid of extra pounds. But doctors do not recommend practicing such a radical method, because it can be harmful to health, and after losing weight it is easy to relapse and gain weight again. At the same time, many people find it difficult to fast even for one day, and several days without food are already considered a record.

It’s hard to believe, but 27-year-old Scot Angus Barbieri did the impossible in 1966 — and did not eat for 382 days. It turns out that the young man refused food for more than a year.

Before the experiment, he weighed 207 kilograms and really wanted to lose weight. Angus consulted doctors and fasted under their supervision. Initially, he planned to not eat for several weeks, but after seeing how the kilograms were burning off, he got involved in the process. The man had a lot of subcutaneous fat, which is why he was able to fast for so long, because the body fed on internal reserves.

What did Angus Barbieri’s diet consist of?

  • Zero calorie drinks — water and tea;
  • Multivitamin complex and separately vitamin C;
  • From 93 to 162 days — additional doses of potassium;
  • From 345 to 355 — additional doses of sodium;

Results of the hunger strike

During the 382 days of the experiment, Barbieri lost 125 kilograms, becoming almost unrecognizable. From 207 kilograms he dropped to 82, ending his hunger strike on July 11, 1966. Surprisingly, the shocking experiment did not affect the man’s health — he was full of energy, and in five years he gained only 5 kilograms. Angus Barbieri started a family and raised two sons before dying at the age of 50.

However, it is not worth repeating such an experiment — even on issues of short-term intermittent fasting, it is important to consult with doctors. After all, every body is unique, and for many people even light fasting programs are strictly contraindicated.
