The UFC 294 tournament, which will take place on October 21, was called by many the main event of the year. Especially for residents of the countries of the former USSR, because many Russian-speaking stars will fight in Abu Dhabi: from Islam Makhachev and Khamzat Chimaev to Magomed Ankalaev and Muhammad Mokaev.
The selection of fighters is not random — the UFC always selects Muslim athletes for tournaments in the UAE. The goal is to reach two audiences at once: the countries of the former USSR, as well as the Muslim world.
Why did Charles Oliveira withdraw from the fight with Makhachev?
Islam Makhachev was scheduled to defend his title against Brazilian Charles Oliveira. They had already met before, and the Russian confidently won. The tournament is about 10 days away, and Oliveira pulled out of the fight with a serious injury.
But during training he suffered a deep cut. He shared the photos on social media, where he received hate from disappointed fans.
They are sure that before such an important tournament it is imperative to train in defense to prevent any injuries. And, of course, do not fight with sparring partners.
Oliveira will be replaced by the UFC champion, who has already fought with Makhachev
Featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski replaced Oliveira. He is lighter than Makhachev, but has already moved up to his weight once to become a double champion. Volkanovski is 10cm shorter and smaller but gave Makhachev his most competitive lightweight fight in years.
The problem is that Volkanovski will be approaching the rematch after undergoing elbow surgery in July. He did not go through a full training camp, which greatly reduces his chances of winning.
“I respect Volkanovski for taking the fight on short notice. But don’t use this as an excuse after the fight,” Makhachev wrote on social networks.
